Case Study

You are planning an outing to a woodland park with the children you care for. You have chosen this location because you have seen that there are lots of trees with low wide branches that the children could climb on, and lots of natural barriers that could make interesting ‘forts’, dens and anything else the children decide to make out of them. You have carried out a risk assessment and have found that all the risks are mild and manageable. One parent is reluctant to give her permission for her child to go on the trip as she believes the environment you have described is dangerous and she doesn’t want her daughter to come back with dirty clothes.
  1. How could you explain to the parent why it is important for her daughter to play in natural outdoor environments?
  2. What are the benefits of the woodland park for the child’s physical development?
  3. What solutions could you suggest to ease the parent’s worries about her child going on the trip?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
