Case Study
Tamara is 2 years old and appears very shy. She’s been at your setting for about a month and you rarely hear her speak even to her Mum or Dad. You have noticed that Tamara seems to be uncomfortable when other children or adults are around and will move away from an activity if another child comes to join in. You haven’t had a chance to talk to Mum or Dad about Tamara as they both seem reluctant to stop and chat and just making eye contact with them is a challenge sometimes.
- How might you help Tamara feel more comfortable around the other children?
- What effect do you think Tamara’s parents own apparent avoidance of social contact has on Tamara’s development?
- How might Tamara benefit from strategies put in place to improve social interactions between staff and her parents?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
