You are working with a group of 5 year olds and last week a new child, Jamil, joined the group. Jamil seems to have no self-control and refuses to speak to anyone for the whole time he is at your setting. You have received complaints from other members of staff about Jamil’s behaviour and parents are also now starting to say that he should be excluded. Jamil’s mother is the only person who delivers and collects him and she speaks very little English
- What questions would you need to have answered in order to decide how to address Jamil’s behaviour?
- How could you assess where whether Jamil has a speech, language or communication problem that is affecting his behaviour?
- Who could you approach for support and advice?
- What strategies could you immediately put in place to manage Jamil’s behaviour?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
