Case Study

Mary has started her working day at the residential home she works in. She starts to prepare equipment ready to get individuals she cares for out of bed and ready for their breakfast. A resident Mary goes to wake up has soiled the bed. Mary goes to get gloves and aprons. A colleague tells her that there are not any on the trolley so she will have to manage and make do.
Mary has had training on personal protective equipment and knows the importance of using gloves.
- If you were Mary, how would you respond to your colleague’s statement?
- Would you tell your manager? What would you say?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
