Support individuals to access and use services and facilities

Avia is a 30-year-old wheelchair user. Her condition has deteriorated recently and she has started to lose his vision in her right eye. She has recently had an operation to remove a cyst from her brain.

She has come into a rest home to recuperate and to enable her father, her primary carer, to have a break. Avia was very independent until her recent illness and the loss of her sight: she was able to drive her own car and get about in her wheelchair, though she had personal carers arrange meals for her, to help her to get dressed and in and out of bed.

With the loss of sight things are beginning to get difficult for Avia. Most of the residents at the care home need a lot of help and are much older than Avia and most are happy to stay in the confines of the home.

Avia has explained that she wants to go out on her own, and also that she did not know the surrounding area as it was 20 miles from her home. She asked what facilities she could visit locally. The senior team member has said residents weren’t allowed out due to Health and Safety regulations and that Avia should go to the day room every day and watch television.

Write an explanation of the following:

  1. How you would deal with situation?
  2. How you would support Avia to identify changes necessary to improve the outcomes from the use of the services and facilities?
  3. How you would encourage Avia and key people to give feedback on:
    • the services and facilities they have identified and used
    • where they have experienced discrimination or exclusion
    • which services and facilities would have been beneficial to well-being and those that have been less helpful

It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
