K5 The principles of risk assessment and management, and how to balance risks and benefits of activities for children.

Case study

The weather forecast for the next week is set to remain sunny and your manager has asked all room leaders to plan to spend as much time outside as possible before autumn starts. You would like to use the outdoors to spend more time playing with the water and sand areas, as the space inside your room is limited.
  • What additional risk assessment and risk management would you need to do in relation to:
    • Water
    • Sand
    • The children being outside
  • What additional risk assessment and risk management would you need to do if you left the water and sand outside for several days?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
