S3 Apply the principles of risk assessment and risk management within documentation and practice

Case Study 1

You are taking a group of children aged 5 years to the park. You will be walking there and having a picnic. You are going to hold a meeting with the children before you go to talk about health and safety.
  • What risks might the children encounter while on the trip and what will you ask the children to do to minimise the risks?
  • What risks will you allow the children to take so that they can be challenged to attempt new physical skills?
  • How will you encourage staff to balance the child’s need for challenge with the potential risk of them harming themselves?
  • What information, if any, would you share with the parents about your proposed trip?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
