K21 How children experience change, transition, and significant events

Case study

The setting you are working in has been asked to take two new children, one aged 21 months and the other aged 3 years. Their father has just moved into the area while their mother is in hospital recovering from a serious operation. You have been told that the two children have spent the last 8 weeks being looked after by different family members in various parts of the country.
  • How could you support the children to settle in your setting?
  • How do you think the children might be feeling?
  • What strategies could you use to prepare the younger child to move to the next room?
  • What strategies could you use to prepare the older child to start school?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
