Be able to review how planned activities support emergent literacy

Case Study
You have been asked to write an evaluation for a maths activity that you planned for 2 and 3 year olds. You have been given your setting’s standard evaluation form and you notice that there is no specific area to evaluate emergent literacy.
- How important do you think it is to have a specific area that asks for an evaluation of the impact of the activity on emergent literacy, regardless of the learning area the activity relates to?
- How relevant is emergent literacy in the planning and evaluation of a maths, or other non-literacy, activity?
- Does the age of the children for whom the activity is planned affect whether emergent literacy should be planned for and evaluated?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
