Understand the principles of inclusive practice and the rights of disabled children and young people and those with special educational needs

Case Study

You have a new child, Leon, joining your setting who uses a wheelchair. You have not had a child using a wheelchair in your setting before. You have a meeting soon with the child’s parent who is anxious to know if his son is going to be able to enjoy and participate fully in the life of the setting.
  1. What might be the barriers to Leon’s participation at your setting?
  2. What could you do to overcome them?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
