Case Study
You have a new student in your class, Jamie, who has just moved with his parents from Australia. Jamie has Down’s syndrome and is currently in the process of getting his Education, Health and Care plan.
As Jamie is new to the country and to your school you will be part of the initial support team.
- How could you observe and identify his needs, capabilities and interests?
- What are the roles and responsibilities of the others who might contribute to the support of a child or young person with Down’s syndrome?
- What are the benefits for you of working with these individuals?
- What are the benefits for Jamie of those around him working well together?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
