Case Study
Douglas has just started working as a receptionist for a large company that has offices in London, New York, and Tokyo. Douglas works in the London office and after lunch receives a call from a woman asking if she can speak to the Head of Operations. Douglas asks her if she knows the name of the person that she is hoping to speak to and the nature of the call. She replies saying that she thinks it’s ‘Ali’ and she wants to speak to him about an ‘exciting opportunity for the company’.
- If you were Douglas, how would you handle this call and what further questions would you ask the caller?
- What do you think you would need to consider working as a receptionist for a company with multiple offices in different countries?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
