Case Study
You are the manager of a large day nursery. The owner of the nursery has shared with you the news that she would like to change staff lunch times from one hour to half an hour, with a second break in either the morning or afternoon. All staff will still take an hour, but not in one continuous period. The reason for this change is to cover the lunch period more effectively and provide more continuity for the children as the staff would only be absent for 30 minutes at a time. It does make sense, but you are nervous about how staff will react to the change and how you can convince them that the change will also benefit them.
- In the scenario described above, consider how you would manage this situation. How would you persuade staff to make changes to their break times and how will you convince them it will be worthwhile?
- You can use examples from your own practice if they are relevant to support your views.
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
