Case Study 2

Jack is 21 years old and has severe learning difficulties, limited vision, challenging behaviour and severe epilepsy. He requires constant one-to-one supervision. He attended a local special needs school until he was 13 and currently lives in your residential school, which is in a neighbouring county to his family home. The council wants to move him to a new placement, and Jack’s mother has come to you as she feels the suggested home is essentially an old people’s home and is concerned it will not meet his needs. Jack has been told he is moving and has not reacted well to the news.
- How can you help in this situation?
- How could you have told Jack about the move to the new home?
- What can you do to help Jack cope with the transition?
- What can you do to help Jack's mother cope with the transition?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
