. Identify collaborative strategies to develop and implement change in relation to physical activities and healthy eating

Case Study

A mother comes to the setting to collect her child in the afternoon. She reads the weekly menu and looks angry and upset. You ask if anything is the matter and she says, “I’ve just had an appointment with the Doctor to discuss Klara’s weight. I was told to stop giving her cakes and puddings to help her with her weight, but I can read here on your menu that you have all sorts of puddings and treats in the nursery.” You try to explain that the nursery’s menu has been checked with a dietician and that each meal is properly balanced, but she storms off. Discuss with your peers to consider the following:
  • Why do you think she stormed off?
  • Could this situation have been handled differently?
  • How could you work with colleagues and health care professionals to meet Klara’s needs?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
