Support children and young people to have positive relationships

Case Study

Katy is a bright and bubbly 4 year old in your room. Recently her father was sent to prison, and she now only has limited and supervised visits with him. Katy’s mother is concerned about the effect this is having on Katy and asks for your advice.
  1. How will you describe the possible effects upon a child of supervised or restricted contact with a loved one?
  2. How could you support Katy to maintain her relationship with her father while he is in prison?
  3. How will you work with Katy’s mother to support Katy’s relationship with her father?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
