Be able to recognise and manage risks to children and young people’s health, safety and security

Case Study

You have been asked to accompany a school trip to a farm and have been approached by the mother of one of the children who is concerned that her child’s health and safety will be at risk and wants to exclude him from the trip. She mentions the dangers of farm machinery, e-coli, and salmonella as just some of the issues that visits to farms can raise. You know that the visit is a key part of the science and geography curriculum this term and feel that the child’s learning may be affected if they miss out on this trip.
  1. Investigate the concerns the parent has raised. How justified are they?
  2. What information can you provide to the parent to demonstrate how the hazards and associated risks can be managed?
  3. What else can you do to support the child (and others in his class) to take some responsibility for their own health and safety when on this trip?
  4. Produce a list of resources and/or websites that can provide additional information for parents, teachers and children when planning school trips to farms.
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
