Know the legislative and policy framework for health and safety within a learning environment

Case Study

While assisting in a science lesson you have noticed that some of the locks on the chemical storage cupboards appear insecure. You overheard two boys in the lesson saying that it would be really easy to open the cupboards and make stink bombs. You know these boys well and are sure that they were probably just joking but you are left feeling uneasy about the chemical storage arrangements.
  1. What should you do about the overheard conversation?
  2. Write a short memo to your line manager detailing your concerns and your views on how the situation could be rectified.
Include suggestions about short term measures that could be taken to secure the chemicals and any long-term solutions. Also include how this concern links with your setting’s health and safety policies and legislation. It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
