Case Study

You have been given a referral from a GP. The referral's name is Helen and she has been diagnosed with hypertension and been referred to you to help.
- What other questions do you need to ask in the consultation?
- How would you record and collect information from Helen?
- Consider physical measurements and if appropriate and how you would handle this?
- Does she have specific goals relating to her medical condition and does she have any others?
- How would you design her programme?
- What exercises would you involve?
- What variations and systems would you use for each fitness component?
- How would you apply fitness principles to the programme?
- Is there room for alternative options if a new goal is wanted or cannot reach goal?
- Does she need a programme away from you? Maybe in her home or with friends?
- When, how and with whom will you share her goals and programme?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
