Case Study
Yesterday you were working with Joan who has dementia and does not remember that her husband died ten years ago. She packed her clothes as she does each day to ‘go home’ with her husband but she managed to slip out of the front door when a visitor came to visit the home.
Fortunately, she was spotted by the family of another resident and persuaded to come back into the home. When you started to unpack her bags, she got angry and then very tearful. By the end of your shift you were feeling very upset and you still feel shaken when you got to work this morning.
- What support is there available to you both within your organisation and from external professionals?
-
What coping methods could you use to maintain your wellbeing?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
