Case Study
Hassana has received an email which appears to be from her bank. However, she has been told about a phishing scam which has recently been targeting the bank’s customers. She begins to study the email to determine whether it is genuine.
-
How can she check the email address the email has been sent from?
- What should she look for in the subject line of the email?
- What should she expect the greeting to be like if it is a genuine email?
- What information might the email ask for if it is a phishing scam?
- If the email has the bank’s logo at the top, does this mean it is genuine?
- If the email asks her to open an attachment, should she do so?
- If the email asks her to click on a link, should she do so?
- What other steps could she take to determine whether the email is genuine?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
