Case study

Ben, one of the two-year-old children you are working with, is new to your setting and he has had a number of tantrums where he throws himself on the floor and cannot stop crying.
The aunt he lives with says he has done that ever since he started living at her house and they just ignore him until he stops.
Consider the five domains of self-regulation and think about what the stressors in the setting and outside of the setting could be.
Make a brief plan of how you could work with Ben to improve his self-regulation.
How would you engage Ben’s aunt in the plan?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
