Case Study

Read the following entries found in the room diary of a class of 3–5-year-olds:
Greta and Barry please update the name labels on the coat rack to accommodate Brian and Jazmin who are starting with us next week. Thank you
(in different handwriting)
Report: Anya was very disruptive today, throwing all the coats on the floor just before playtime. Once outside she attacked one little boy just because he wanted to play on the slide. She’s obviously playing up because her mum is distracted by the new baby. Please let mum know when she collects Anya at the end of the day.
- What do you think of the report about Anya?
Imagine you were also present on this day. Write your own observation that covers the incidents mentioned in a more objective way.
- Are there any issues arising from writing the report in the room diary in this way?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
