Imogen and Robyn are considering adopting a child.

They both feel like they could give a child a safe, supportive home and as Imogen works part-time and Robyn is retired, they have the time and capacity to help the child settle into their new home and thrive. The couple feel like they could make the most difference to the life of a teenager who has been in care and has never experienced a loving, stable home.
- What could you tell Imogen and Robyn about adopting a teenager with a history of adversity?
- How might the adversity of being a ‘looked after child’ have affected the brain development of the teenager?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
