Case Study

Adhira lives in supported housing with two other people. A team of care staff come in every day to help them. You are the new manager at the house and want to introduce person-centred thinking and planning to the team. Adhira goes to a day centre three times a week and to college two days a week. This was arranged for her by her care manager.
Adhira has told you that she does not like the day centre because some of the other service-users who go there are not nice to her. You have talked to the staff of the day centre and they say there is no problem. Adhira would like to get a job, but has been told in the past by your staff team that this is out of the question because people with learning difficulties do not get jobs.
- How might you implement person-centred planning and thinking into the team, who are quite resistant to change?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
