K1 The importance of equality, diversity, and inclusion, and respecting children’s social and cultural context

This video from Kids Math TV asks the question ‘How Does Culture Influence a Child’s Cognitive Development?’ Culture is an encompassing envelop within which elements of a society live. Your cultural background will shape the way you think and learn. Some cultures lay a good foundation for understanding certain subjects. Others negatively affect the way a child interacts later in life. This American video mentions smacking; however, in England it is illegal for teachers, nursery workers and workers in other education settings to hit children in their care – ever. It is also illegal for a parent or carer to smack their own child unless it amounts to "reasonable punishment" – which is assessed by taking into account the child's age and the force of the smack.
