Be able to work with parents/carers in a way which encourages them to take an active role in their child's play, learning and development

Case Study

You have been told that you are to be Key Person to a new child at your setting. James is 4 years old and lives with his mother and half-sister. Apparently there is no father figure in James’ life. Today you met James and his mother for the first time. In talking with James’ mother she tells you that James never listens to her and is constantly naughty. She tells you that she is sending James to the nursery so that you can get him to behave.
  1. What challenges do you think James’ mother presents for you to get her involved in James’ play, learning and development?
  2. What strategies could you use to begin to encourage her involvement?
  3. What resources might be useful to support your encouragement of James’ mother?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
