Be able to use observations to assess and plan for the developmental needs of children in line with current frameworks

Case Study

You have been asked to assist a new member of staff with planning activities for her Key children over the next month. Alia is unhappy about this and feels that she is not trusted to do the task properly. Alia is unclear why your setting’s planning template includes development areas other than the one she is planning for, and appears to be having problems completing the section concerning differentiation and providing suitable adjustments to accommodate children who are developing outside the expectations for their age.
  1. Why is it important that planning reflects the developmental needs of the children viewed holistically?
  2. What are the benefits of including others in your planning?
  3. What resources can practitioners use to assess whether children are developing within expectations for their age?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
