Appraise staff performance

Case Study

It is time for the annual appraisals in your organisation, and this is the first time you have had a team working for you. You have a team of four that you have been responsible for over the last 11 months. One staff member is new to the role, and has needed a lot of support in the six months they have been in the company. Two staff members have been with in role for over three years and you are happy with their performance, but you feel they need more challenge. One member of the team has been doing the job for over 10 years, and you feel that they are no longer fully engaged in the role. Think through and plan the four appraisals you will need to give, and work out a time line.
  1. Whom, if anyone, do you need to talk to about these appraisals?
  2. How could you develop the new starter?
  3. How could you add additional challenge to the roles of the established staff – what development options are available?
  4. How should you deal with the individual who appears to be disengaged, and how should you discuss your concerns?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that your response will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
