Understand why communication is important in the work setting

Good communication is essential in ensuring dignity in care It is important that people have time to express their needs and preferences and that staff understand the person they are supporting It is vital that staff develop other ways of communicating with people who have a cognitive impairment of limited speech Watch the video and make notes. Is there anything that you can relate to your setting?

Look at notices around your setting that are written for staff or family members. Are the notices written in a friendly, respectful and polite way? Could they be re-worded to promote the same message but to show a different and more respectful attitude towards others?
Think about the information family members might want to know about their loved ones when they come to visit. Do you communicate this information clearly? Ask them if they feel you keep them well-informed and if there is anything else they would like to know.
