Case Study
Matthew is 6 months old and arrives with his mum and dad at the Rosie and Jim nursery.
They are shown to Tootle room where Marcia the room leader greets them. Marcia is a cheerful and kind lady and makes the parents and Matthew feel very welcome. She explains that the key worker for Matthew is unfortunately on annual leave today, so she will go through the details for Matthew, finding out all about him and showing his parents where everything is.
She explains that they should feel comfortable to let Matthew sit with the other children and join in but stay close by. She then says when they come back in in 2 days’ time the key worker will be there to meet them.

Does it matter if the key worker is not available for the very first visit?

How might the parents be feeling?

Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
