Understand why effective communication is important in the work setting

Case Study

You have a new member of staff at your setting and, despite receiving a good induction, it is obvious from her practice that she is not following the setting’s policies and procedures effectively. You arrange to meet with her each Friday to give her some extra training. At your meetings, you point out some of the ways in which she is not meeting your expectations. She tells the setting manager that you are picking on her and that you expect too much from her.
  1. What strategies could you use to clarify your intentions to your member of staff and to your setting manager?
  2. How could you communicate the ways that this member of staff could improve their practice in a more positive way?
  3. What additional help could you seek out for your member of staff?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
