Case Study

You look after Mrs Moss’s daughter, Claire, and Mrs Moss asks to see you privately. During the meeting she tells you that her husband has left her and that Claire is very distressed about this. She tells you that Claire has been sleepwalking and is not eating.
She confides in you that she has not been sleeping or eating well herself and is not coping very well with the situation. She has been tearful and short-tempered in front of Claire.
- Describe the communication response that would be appropriate in this situation and include reference to your facial expression and body language.
- You tell Mrs Moss that “time is a great healer”, and she bursts into tears. How might you respond appropriately to her reaction to your comment?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
