Be able to review own practice in supporting the learning and development of children in their early years

This video from the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority looks at ‘Critical reflection in practice’ and what this may look like in practice. Watch the video and make notes. Is there anything that you can relate to your setting? What can you learn from watching the video?

Click on the icon to the left to access the Development Matters for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Pick one area of development and look at the Areas of Learning tables for that area. Read the ‘A Unique Child’ column for each row of the table and follow it across to the last column. Now consider your own practice. How do you meet the ‘Positive Relationships’ and ’Enabling Environments’ for each row? Compare your practice to that described in the table. How could you improve your practice based on the information you find there?

The Early Childhood Australia’s Blog contains an article on ‘Reflective Practice: Making a commitment to ongoing learning’. Although it refers to the Australian National Standards, it contains helpful information about thinking critically about your practice.
