Be able to critically evaluate enabling play environments

Case Study

A group of babies at your setting are using the outdoor area. This comprises a large concrete area with bikes and scooters, a large sand pit and play house. Two practitioners are sitting on the grass with the babies. Two of the babies, aged 1 year and 1 year 3 months, are playing with a basket of balls. They are picking them up and dropping them into one practitioner’s lap. The older baby then picks up a ball, toddles over to the fence and posts the ball through it. The younger baby is not quite able to walk and so crawls to the fence to post a ball through.
  1. Are the babies’ needs being sufficiently met?
  2. How could the outdoor area be improved to meet more of the babies’ needs?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
