Lead change to inform Special Educational Needs and/or Disability (SEND) provision in an Early Years Setting

Set a timer for 5 minutes. Brainstorm a list of topics that interest you within the early years, such as: • Barriers to identification of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities in the early years • Supporting child-led play as a SENCo • The impact of increasing the ratio for over 2s as a SENCo • The relationship between parent/carer participation and children’s progress? 1. Review your list and write down as many ideas relating to your chosen topic as you can, then pick one of these ideas and spend 5 – 10 minutes writing as much as you can about that particular area 2. Share your thoughts with a colleague, explaining to them why you are interested in this particular area Think about your chosen topic and imagine you are going to conduct research into this within your setting. 3. Create two leaflets about informed consent – one to share with children and one to share with parents/carers • Explain what research is, what your research is about and the methods you will use • You must also make it clear that everyone has a choice as to whether they take part and that the information you gather will be shared • Ensure that you are honest about the level of anonymity and confidentiality that you can guarantee. It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
