Understand how to support the development of children and young people’s social and emotional identity and self-esteem in line with their age and level of understanding

This TEDxYouth talk called ‘Meet yourself: A user’s guide to building self-esteem’ features Niko Everett. The talk looks at how to encourage young people to recognise and value their own abilities, talents and achievements.

Search on the internet for “building self-esteem in children”. Look at some of the websites and advice that is given. Make notes on what strategies are regularly mentioned and any which seem more controversial. Consider how you might be able to use some of the strategies in your work with children and young people.
Research your local area for clubs and activities that children and young people can join which would encourage them to recognise their own abilities, talents and achievements. Try to include some more unusual activities which would suit those who are not sporty, musical or particularly out-going. Make a list of the activities, who they are aimed at and how a child or parent could contact them.
Look at resources on the internet aimed at helping children set goals. Try to find ways to support children which relate to their stage of development and understanding. Notice the key similarities and the key differences in their approaches.
