Case Study
Erin has started a new job at the St Ames City and District Council and one of her responsibilities is managing a team of ten individuals. Prior to her appointment, there was no formal appraisal process in place at the council. Her line manager, Alik, draws her attention to the below announcement from the government. “From 15 July 2015, all councils in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales will need to conduct formal staff appraisals.” The government has not, however, specified a particular process for appraisals. Alik knows that Erin came from an organisation that used the ‘360 degree feedback’ performance appraisal so asks her to access it’s suitability for the council, and also suggest other appraisal processes.
- If you were Erin, what other processes would you suggest?
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the ‘360 degree feedback’ process for your organisation.
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
