Case Study

Christmas is approaching, and everyone in the office usually puts up Christmas decorations and enjoys a big Christmas office party. This year, it’s your responsibility to decorate and organise the party. Your manager lets you know that a new colleague, James, is a Jehovah’s Witness and doesn’t celebrate Christmas. You overhear a colleague making a comment about how he should get into the ‘festive spirit’ and celebrate Christmas with the rest of the people in the office.
  1. How do you ensure that no offence is caused to James whist allowing others to embrace the occasion?
  2. What would you say to your colleague?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
