Case Study

Ashley has just started working in the picking and packing part of an internet shopping warehouse. He has seen processes and procedures that he believes are slowing down the response times meaning they are not so cost effective and efficient as they could be. Ashley has come from a warehouse that was much more efficient and would very much like to get things changed but he is new to the warehouse and others have been working there doing the things the same way for many years. He decides to tell his team supervisor what he thinks and says “I really don’t think we should work like this. It would be so much better if we put regularly ordered items closer to the packing bay. That way we don’t all waste time going backwards and forwards all day for the same things. You are all just wasting time half the day. If we moved all this stuff over here, we could probably get twice as many orders out each day!” Ashley’s supervisor does not like his comments and advises him to keep his opinions to himself.
  1. Why do you think Ashley’s comments were not well received?
  2. Are his comments worth consideration?
  3. How might he have done things differently?
  4. How might other employees feel about what he is saying?
  5. Who would benefit from great efficiencies in the warehouse?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
