Case Study

Mark has come in for a gym induction and he wants to build muscle in his arms and chest. He has had niggles in his knees but has never had an operation or been told anything is wrong with him by the doctor so he has a clear PAR-Q. He is very keen to do weighted exercises isn’t a fan of doing cardio, and can get in the gym a few times a week.
- What others questions do you need to ask to assess readiness for exercise?
- What would a programme for Mark look like?
- Think about exercises, sets, reps, rest time
- Do you need to include all components of fitness?
- Would you include or not include cardiovascular in his programme considering what he has told you?
- How would you build up muscles in arms and chest in particular?
- Think about progressions and regressions of each exercises?
- What instruction methods would you use to deliver the session?
- How could you keep Mark motivated throughout the session?
- How would you monitor exercise intensity throughout the session?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
