Continuous improvement in adult care

A domiciliary care service has been receiving complaints from the staff that work there that they do not feel like their views are being listened to, respected, or acted on.

Many employees feel like they have ideas and suggestions for improvements from their daily experiences of providing home care, but do not feel like they have a way of presenting them to management. Some employees also said that during performance reviews, they tried to share their thoughts, but were told that reviews were about their performance only and not an opportunity for them to provide feedback on their managers or the organisation.

  1. As a manager, do you think that ideas for improvement should only come from management, or do you see a place for employee feedback?
  2. Do you agree that performance reviews should be about employee performance only?
  3. How could this domiciliary care service resolve this issue and boost staff morale and engagement?

It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
