Be able to lead activities which support the development of speech, language and communication of children / Be able to critically evaluate provision for developing speech, language and communication for children in own setting

Displays and mobiles in the setting are an excellent way to convey the visual atmosphere of the setting. Parents and children benefit hugely from well-chosen resources and attractive displays. Design and prepare an Interactive Interest Table displaying three dimensional objects. Bear in mind the following:-

  • Think about the location of the display and where it will be most enjoyed.
  • Use a range of stimulating features (visual and tactile).
  • Consider linking the display to a common theme (e.g. ‘Winter Wonderland’, ‘Colours’, etc.) Take plenty of photographs for the table.
  • Make sure the table reflects children’s personal thoughts and suggestions which are added to the table.
  • Link the table with statements from the seven areas of learning from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
  • Make the table work on different levels, not simply a flat surface.
Create a plan for your assessor to have a look at, focusing on the making of the table – did you have any issues that you had to solve? How did you choose the subject of the table? With a group of children, reflect on what worked and what you could modify or change for next time. Ask some of the parents what they thought about the display also. Please take a photograph of the end product.
