Case Study
An English Literature GCSE class you were working with in year 10 has just started their final year in the school. In the first lesson of the new school year you realise there is a new student in the class. The new boy seems to be struggling to complete the work that has been set.
After the lesson the teacher tells you in confidence that the boy has moved from Scotland to live with his grandparents as his mother was in an unhealthy relationship. In his last school the boy had been ahead in class and already sat some of his exams, but the English school curriculum was different to the one he had been studying.
- How could you support the boy to manage the move to England, the change of school and the change in course content?
- How could you provide an opportunity to discuss the effect of this transition?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
