Planning gym-based exercise

Case Study

Mary is 22 years old; she has come to you because she wants to look good for her holiday in Ibiza. She has a clear PAR-Q and has signed an informed consent form. She says she wants to lose 4 kg in six weeks with a focus on building muscle in her glutes and triceps. She has used gyms before but mainly focused on cardio so wants to be introduced to more resistance exercises. She is fairly active as her job is a dog walker but suffers from lordosis. She has time to train morning or evening as many times as needed a week. Think about designing Mary a programme
  1. What other questions do you need to do for screening to gather more information?
  2. What exercises are you going to choose?
  3. With those exercises what variables are you going to do?
  4. Consider using all components of fitness
  5. For someone who has not done resistance training, what exercises and reps are appropriate?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
