Case study

Susi has approached you as a new client in your gym you work in. The initial information she has given you is that she wants to lose weight and tone up her arms and legs and can either train with you or work out alone/with friends 4 times a week. She has a clear PAR-Q, she is 29 years old and lives alone in a second floor flat. She is a very shy character that is nervous about trying new things in the gym hence her asking for your help.
- What other questions do you need to ask in consultation?
- How would you record and collect information from Susi?
- Consider whether physical measurements are appropriate and how you would handle this?
- Are her goals she has given you SMART or do you need agree more refined goals with her?
- Does she need short, medium- and long-term SMART goals?
- How would you design her programme?
- What exercises would you involve?
- What variations and systems would you use for each fitness component?
- How would you apply fitness principles to the programme?
- Is there room for alternative options if new goal is wanted or can’t reach goal?
- Does she need a programme away from you?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
