Case Study

Glenda is 42 years old; she has clear PAR-Q with no injuries. She wants to lose two stone but she does not know what is realistic. She says she struggles to find time to exercise as she has two young children ages 6 and 8 but also has no confidence to use the gym on her own.
With this limiting information start thinking:
- How can I make her feel at ease?
- What techniques and communication skills can I use to build rapport?
- What other questions do I need to ask? Lifestyle, work, likes/dislikes
- Has all pre-screening questions been covered?
- What methods of gathering information would be appropriate?
- How can you overcome her barriers to exercise? What solutions could you offer/identify?
- How can you turn her goal into a SMART goal?
- When will you review this goal? Split the goal into short, medium and long term for reviews?
- How will you record and store all this information?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
