Programme design and delivery for personal training

Case Study

Austin has approached you in the gym. He wants to do strength training as he wants to increase his muscle mass by another 4% in 6 months’ time. He is 31 years old with a clear PAR-Q. He has done muscular endurance/hypertrophy training before where he has performed 12-20reps of an exercise but wants to focus more on strength training. The parts he wants to focus on is his chest and shoulders. Using this information:
  1. How could you apply periodisation to his programmes?
  2. How will principles of F.I.T.T relate?
  3. What training methods and techniques would you do?
  4. What should the rep range be for strength training?
  5. What exercises would be in his programmes?
  6. Should you solely look at chest and shoulders?
  7. Give suitable progressions and regressions for each exercise
  8. How can you keep him motivated throughout the 6 months?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
