Principles of exercise, fitness and health

Case Study

You have just started working with John, who is a new client. John wants to lose weight as well as improve his posture as he works at a desk from 9 to 5 five days a week. He does not play any sport but would like to be able to run around with his kids at the weekend. He is quite a beginner to exercise and gets de-motivated relatively easily so wants something he can stick to. He also wants you to write him a weekly diet plan. He struggles with his diet and cannot understand why he never loses weight when he does not think he eats that bad. He admits to not eating five fruit and veg a day but he does try keep his sugar intake down. With the example above think about:
  1. Health or skill related fitness principles?
  2. Programming principles for a beginner?
  3. How can I apply the principles of F.I.T.T to John?
  4. Energy balance?
  5. Is there a postural problem? What exercises can I do to help with posture?
  6. Does my professional boundaries allow me to give a detailed diet plan?
  7. Does John eat according to the eat well plate?
  8. Is he lacking anything in his diet?

Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge our response if necessary.
